10 ways to Heal from the legacy of Intergenerational Trauma
Young Black Men in America face major hurdles to their development and well-being. Social and economic indicators of Black male development provide a profile of an underachieving placement and pipeline to prison projectile.
It is no secret that a “Grassroots” effort is needed to alleviate the suffering many of these young men do in silence. Having suffered in silence for many years myself I understand the toil it can take on one’s mental health, relationships, finances, sense of self and balance when it comes to ascending upwards from adolescence to Adulthood.
From an early age, it has become increasingly apparent that Black males are confronted with a series of roadblocks. It’ a war that has been with these young men since our arrival in America. What is it that Young Black Men want? How do we penetrate the gross negligence, toxic masculinity, inequity, hate, gun violence, poverty, and hopelessness that pervades the subcultures of these young men?
Over my lifetime, I have realized that the materialistic side of life (I.e., cars, clothes, sex, money, fame, fortune, houses, etc.); are mere Band-Aids to the real issues that must be addressed. The emotional baggage that has been left in the wake of America’s heavy hand on the black community; has left permanent scars on psyche of our forefathers and mothers.
What should we expect of the children’s children’s children of these past generations? The answer reveals that young black men are not exempt from the harsh realities of a path that they were ordained to traverse. When you look into the eyes of a young black man you can’t help but to see the pain.
Although, a Young Black Man will fall 7 times and have to overcome much adversity in this life he will always need to a support system that can dish out wise counsel according to the dynamics of his personalized situation. In the bible we are reminded that “For By wise counsel thou shall make war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety”.
As young black men you will find it extremely liberating to know that there is a way out. Your liberation will always consist of a system of instruction. It can be a very grueling process to the untrained mind. You might have to give up your thinking process about things that are beyond your control.
In this life there are somethings that will happen that might never make sense. And, instead of allowing your past traumas to feed the new reality you separate our the two which prevents you from suffering in silence. What if I told you that if you embrace the 10 ideas below you would become a Billion in 40 years. What would that mean to you?
Your upward mobility and life trajectory is of the upmost importance to the future of the Black Community. Pick a few concepts from below and seek to add them to your way of being. Allow, the toxic masculinity and self-hate to dissipate.
I want to take a moment to offer up 10 ways that would aid in the discussion surrounding Intergenerational Trauma. It’s a hard proposition to go through this life without an understanding of why. Why am I here? Why the abuse? Why God? Why was all of this pain necessary? Why did it take losing my father to understand the significance of Family?
These Suggestions are what helped me to overcome defeat and bask in a greater glory of self-love, self-knowledge and self-empowerment.
